Scripture Text: Luke 9:51-56
When the days for Jesus to be taken up were fulfilled, he resolutely determined to journey to Jerusalem, and he sent messengers ahead of him. On the way they entered a Samaritan village to prepare for his reception there, but they would not welcome him because the destination of his journey was Jerusalem. When the disciples James and John saw this, they asked, "Lord, do you want us to call down fire from heaven to consume them?" Jesus turned and rebuked them, and they journeyed to another village.
Breaking the text open – background and summary:
Today’s gospel, though short, is profound in its shift in Jesus’ focus from ministry to fulfilling God’s plan of salvation for us in Jerusalem. Though He knows how this will end, He responds to the rejection of the Samaritans not with force but loving acceptance.
Meditating on the text with personal questions:
How willing am I to accept the LORD’s will in a moment if it means suffering? How forgiving am I of others who reject me, especially when I’m trying to do something good?
Praying:
LORD, Almighty Father, we turn our minds and hearts to You and lift our voices in praise and thanksgiving for Who You are and for your unfathomable love that included our salvation at the price of the life of your beloved and only Begotten Son. Send your Spirit to stir our resolve so that we might more faithfully seek to discern your will for us and more courageously act upon it. We ask this in the name of your Son, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with You and the Spirit, one LORD, forever and ever. Amen.
