Daily Scripture Reflection & Prayer: September 30,2026

LECTIO - Read Scripture Text: Luke 9:57-62
And it came to pass as they journeyed, a certain man said to Jesus, “Lord, I will follow you wheresoever you go.” And Jesus said to him, “Foxes have dens, and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.”
And He said to another, “Follow me.” But he answered, “Lord, allow me to go first and bury my father.” Jesus said to him, “Let the dead bury their dead, but you go and preach the kingdom of God.”
And another said to Him, “Lord, I will follow you but first let me bid farewell to my family at my house.” And Jesus said to him, No man, having his hand to the plow and looking back is fit for the Kingdom of God.”
MEDITATIO - Meditate on text, allow the LORD to touch us with His Word:
Do I make excuses for not living my discipleship and following Jesus? Do I stall in my commitment?
BREAKING OPEN THE TEXT:
In today’s gospel, Jesus shares the harsh reality of discipleship with us. First, we are not assured of the comforts we may desire on our journey, it is challenging. Second, the son who begs for time to bury his father is stalling. If his father were dead or dying, in the Jewish world, this man would not be out in public listening to prophets. Jesus recognizes the man’s tactic and challenges him to begin at the present to proclaim the kingdom – not to postpone it. Lastly, the man who wishes to bid farewell represents a divided heart. His emotional hesitations tells Jesus that he is straddling the decision to follow Christ.
ORATIO – Lifting our minds and hearts to the LORD in prayer:
LORD Jesus Christ, Son of God, my Savior, You call to me, “Follow Me.” And yet I find myself hesitating. Forgive me, LORD. Send the Spirit to rouse within me the courage to let go and follow You regardless of my fears. Grant that I may learn to let go of the guarantees for comfort and security and trust in You, your power, your presence, your love. May I grow into the disciple You call me to be. I pray, in your name, Jesus Christ.
CONTEMPLATIO – Sitting with the LORD in silence for a minute or more
